Cybersecurity, New Tax Law Top Agenda at Nationwide Tax Forums

Tax professionals can earn up to 19 continuing education credits at the IRS Nationwide Tax Forums this summer. Each forum offers 43 seminars and workshops presented by experts from the IRS and association partners. Topics include cybersecurity, changes to the tax law, ethics and more. Plan your travel accordingly as classes, in all five venues, will be going till the end of the day on Thursday. Locations, registration, hotel information, and more is available here. Tax professionals who pre-register by June 15, 2019, qualify for an early bird rate of $235 per person. The standard rate, starting June 16, is $255. Attendees who register less than two weeks before a Forum or registers on-site pays $370. Case Resolution Program The Nationwide Tax Forums offer tax professionals with unresolved client cases the opportunity to meet face to face with IRS representatives in the IRS Case Resolution Program. In 2018 case resolution staff worked on 872 cases with a resolution rate of 99 percent. A Forum attendee must bring a valid power of attorney for any case he or she wishes to resolve. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act: Things Learned During the 2019 Filing Season This course discusses the experiences realized after actually applying the provisions that were changed, created, repealed and temporarily suspended as a result of enacting TCJA. The course will review the winners, the losers, updated forms and challenges encountered. The course will discuss planning issues and federal tax policy issues dealing with individuals, corporations, partnerships and the underlying investors. On Thursday evening May 24, 2018, NSTP’s Director of Education, Paul La Monaca, CPA, MST, attended an invitation only event at The American University in Washington, D.C. The event featured Acting Commissioner Dave Kautter, who also holds the position of Assistant Secretary of Tax Policy. Mr. Kautter addressed a select group of about 50 individuals invited by Professor Don Williamson, American University’s Director of the Master’s in Taxation Program and Executive Director of the Kogod Tax Policy Center. Commissioner Kautter shared his career experiences in tax, from his days with Ernst & Young, serving on Capital Hill and as the former Managing Director of the Kogod Tax Policy Center and Professor at the School of Business. The Commissioner addressed information on the recent passage of The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the work that is being done at the Internal Revenue Service as a result of the Legislation. The discussion was moderated by the current Managing Director of the Kogod Tax Policy Center, Caroline Bruckner who also served on Capital Hill.
