You can upload documents to the IRS to respond to an IRS notice or letter when specifically requested. However, do not submit tax returns through this tool, as they cannot be processed through this system.
What you need
- An access code (if provided) or the notice or letter number or title
- The first and last name or business name on the notice or letter
- Social Security, individual taxpayer identification or employer identification number
How it works
The IRS Document Upload Tool is a secure, easy and fast way to send information to the IRS. You can use the tool to:
- Upload scans, photos, or digital copies of documents as JPGs, PNGs or PDFs
- Get confirmation that we received your documents
Taxpayers are authorized to use the Document Upload Tool to only upload documents that the IRS has specifically requested in eligible correspondence. If the correspondence you select from the menu in the tool does not give you the option to upload documents, then do not use the Document Upload Tool to submit your response. Instead, follow the instructions in the correspondence. Images of your signature (scanned or photographed) appearing on any document that you are authorized to upload is prima facie evidence that the document was signed by you.
If you do not have an access code
You can enter the notice or letter number. Selecting the wrong notice or letter from the drop-down menu could cause delays.
Verify it is the IRS
If you receive a notice with a link, carefully check it. It should include “https” and “irs.gov.” For example: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-notice-or-letter.
